THE MIX PRAYER GUIDE

The Mix Prayer Watch 2019
Friday, February 22 (11am) to Sunday, February 23 (11pm)
The Classic Center

Thank you so much for being a part of The Mix Prayer Watch 2019. Your prayer is part of a huge thing God is doing in our city. It’s God’s desire to move powerfully in Athens, and this student gathering is both catalytic and important. The prayers you pray matter. We are believing that God is going to do mighty awesome things because of our united fervent, focused, prevailing prayer. As you pray, please pray big audacious prayers of faith for God to do what only He can do!!! There is no limit on what God can or even wants to do. It is beyond our imagination (Ephesians 3:20, Isaiah 55:8-9). No wonder King David wrote, “You faithfully answer our prayers with awesome deeds, O God our Savior!” (Psalm 65:5a NLT). Our primary purpose of The Mix is to provide a relevant and safe context for students across our city to come to a saving relationship with Jesus. As you pray please keep this priority before you. Jesus said…

“It is not My heavenly Father’s will that even one of these little ones should perish.” Matthew 18:14 NLT

Prayer Topics

Students
Pray by name for the students that came from your church that they would have a fresh encounter with God. The names of all the student at The Mix, by churches, have been handwritten on poster boards and will be plastered on the walls in the prayer room. As each student gets prayed for, a line will be drawn through their name with a highlighter pen. By the end of The Watch, each student will have a rainbow drawn through their name, proclaiming God’s faithfulness to them!

Pray for salvation – that not one student would leave here without Christ (1 Timothy 4:12). Pray for the wandering children to come home (Luke 15:11-32). Pray for breakthroughs, for physical, emotional and spiritual healing, and reconciliation of relationships. Pray for new godly relationships to be forged. Pray that the students would be receptive to all that God wants to do in and through them. Pray for divine conversations between them and their leader. Pray for the students from other churches, as well as the students across the city. Ask God to do what only He can do and that every student would leave here different than when they arrived! Pray that the Father’s name would be made holy and that His kingdom would come powerfully and tangibly throughout The Mix. Pray that His will would be done among the thousands of students at The Mix. Feel free to pray scriptures over them. For example, Psalm 119:9, Galatians 5:19-23, Ephesians 1:16-18 (as well as the ones below).

Leaders
Pray for all the leaders that came with your church. Ask that they would be filled with the Holy Spirit. Ask God to give them favor with their students and stamina to keep up with them. Ask God to create specific divine moments of dialog with each student in their care. Ask that God would give them courage to say what they need to say, in a way that the students will listen and hear. Ask God to be working in them, as well as in the students. Ask God to awaken first love in them, faith, hope, joy, purpose and fire in their bellies for His mission. Ask that not one leader who came would leave the same!

Volunteers
There are an army of volunteers who make The Mix possible. From the drivers, to the host homes, to the group leaders, to greeters and door openers, to production team and others. Please pray that God would bless each and every one of them as they serve this weekend. Ask God to pour back into them as they pour out into the students. Pray for protection on the roads and in the homes. Pray for health and stamina. Ask God to close every door where the enemy might try to attack, that where the enemy comes to kill, steal and destroy, God would release life, even super abundant life (John 10:10).

Worship
Pray for Paul Smith and FRVR FREE Worship as they lead worship throughout The Mix. Pray that it would be more than just songs, or intensity or emotional hype. Pray that students would powerfully and tangibly encounter God during the worship sets. Pray that the Kingdom would come and God’s will would be done on earth as it is in heaven while worship is happening.

Speaker
Pray for C.L. ‘Shep’ Shepherd. Ask God to anoint his speaking and breathe over every word that comes out of his mouth. Pray that the students would listen intently, eagerly and be willing to receive and respond as the Lord leads. Pray that God’s Word would not return void but would accomplish all that He desires of it (Isaiah 55:10-11).

The theme that Shep will be speaking on is “Past, Present, Future.” He will be looking at stepping up, out and in. Here are the key verses and small group discussion questions for each session. Please pray into these questions and the discussions that will come.

Session 1 (Step Up): Matthew 7:24-27 (NLT)
•Have you ever struggled with thoughts of hopelessness or helplessness?
•What is important to remember when battling negative thoughts and emotions?
•Based on the fruit of your life, which foundation have you built your life on?
•What does the Gospel mean to you?
•How can you apply tonight’s message to your life?

Session 2 (Step Out): Matthew 14:22-33 (NLT)
• What are some of the areas of your life that you feel you have become too comfortable?
•Do you feel God is calling you to go deeper in a specific area of your life?
•How can you dismiss the defeated dialogue in or around your life daily?
•What bold decision do you need to make today?

Session 3 (Step In): Daniel 3:8-12 (NLT)
•What things have you allowed to separate you from those you should be standing in unity with?
•What are you willing to “lay down” tonight in order to fulfill God’s purpose for your life?
•Are you facing any adversity personally that has tried to cripple you with fear?
•How can you be strong and courageous moving forward?

Churches in Athens
Pray for revival in each church across our city. Start with yours and the ones you know. Then include others from the list of churches (see below). Pray for your pastor to lead well, to grow in passionate love and faith in Jesus, for a hunger of God’s Word. Pray for your pastor to walk in integrity and purity. Pray for the other pastors in our city as well. Pray for the church leadership to have courageous faith, to be willing to try new things, and to mobilize the Body to reach out and disciple people in our city. Pray for unity in and among the churches in Athens. Pray for every wall of division between churches to come down, whether they are racial, gender, denominational, pride, offense or whatever! Pray that God would establish such unity among churches in Athens that He releases the commanded blessing that He promised would accompany it (Psalm 133).

Churches involved in The Mix
Over 30 churches and ministries from Athens (and a few from outside) are involved in The Mix. David wrote in Psalm 133 that it is good when we dwell together in unity, for in that place God commands (bestows and releases) a blessing, even life forevermore. That’s what is happening this weekend. The Mix is not an event, it is an expression of the unity that God has and is establishing in His churches in Athens. As such, we can ask Him to release His blessing upon us. Jesus said that when we are one as He and the Father are one, then the world will see and believe He is who He says He is (John 17:20-23). Please pray that God would command His blessing on these churches and ministries, even life forevermore (that is mass salvations and kingdom growth). Pray that this blessing would overflow and impact even the churches not involved in The Mix this year! Pray that The Mix would be catalytic and change the spiritual atmosphere over our city!!!

Families
Pray for the families of every student who are a part of The Mix.  Pray that the parents would be ready to help, even respond to the change in their children when they return from The Mix. Pray for God to increase His presence in each one of these homes! Pray for marriages to be miraculously reconciled and healed.  Pray for parent-child relationships to be restored. Pray for dads (and/or moms) to come home!

Campuses
As the students go back to school on Monday, be asking that God would fan a flame of revival on each of these campuses. Pray that these campuses would be turned upside down by the students who were impacted this weekend at The Mix.

Pray for the salvation and strengthening of the principals, faculty and teachers. Ask God to release a greater freedom and courage for these adult leaders to make way for a move of God on each campus. Pray for darkness to be shattered, the veil to be removed and light to increase dramatically in each school. Pray for a spiritual awakening so that every student on every campus would hear the Gospel without hindrance or distortion, in a way they can understand and be free to choose Jesus! Pray for increased angelic activity across the campuses in Athens. Call out each campus by name (see list below)!

Ask God for greater openness to spiritual things, for clouds of darkness to be displaced by the increasing light of Jesus and His presence on these campuses. Ask God for the students to have freedom to walk out their faith at their school. Please pray for each of these school by name…

End of Summer Prayer Vigil Guide

August 3-4, 2018 from 8pm to 8pm
Wesley Prayer Chapel

Thank you for participating the Athens End of the Summer Prayer Vigil. This is going to be an amazing gathering of churches and groups from around Athens, joining together to pray with one voice, for the students going back to school in the very near future (some have already started). While putting this guide together I asked various pastors, campus ministers and prayer leaders what they thought should be included. Their suggestions include what they have been praying for already and want to invite us to join them. So, as you pray, see that you are agreeing with others who are praying the same things!!! There’s power in the prayer of agreement!

Please use this guide as a guide. It is meant to be a launch pad to pray for the students whom God has put on your heart. Pray as the Holy Spirit leads you (Romans 8:26-27) and realize that He takes your little and makes much of it! At the end of this guide there are scriptures and promises you can pray over your students as well as over their campuses. Feel free to pray for other students, campuses and faculty across Athens. We are crying out for a movement of God in all the schools in our city.

Don’t feel like you have to pray for every aged student. If you have elementary students, you have a greater identification for them. You probably know the teachers and key leaders, and you probably know the specific things that need to shift (for God) on that campus. Go for it, with laser precision, shoot those prayer missiles where they need to go. And believe big, because your prayers (and all that will ascend to the Throne of Grace this weekend) WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

As you pray, please include home schools and special needs students and teachers. They are often forgotten, but these teachers need extra grace to carry their load and these kids at home and special children need a grace to learn and to experience God’s love.

One last thing, it is our desire that on every campus and at every school, there would be a spirit filled witness for Christ. Ultimately, we are praying for every student and their teachers and faculty, from elementary through college, to come to a saving, life transforming, intimate relationship with Jesus Christ

1 Timothy 2:3-4 (NLT)
This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.

2 Peter 3:9 (NIV)
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

I – Elementary
Here are some areas that elementary children need prayer…

Pray that they would make wise choices. Pray that they would gather around them friends who will lift them up instead of tearing them down or leading them astray.

Pray that they would show grace and kindness to others. That other students would see Jesus in them.

Pray that they would remain strong in tough times. That though they are young, they would be strong in the Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill them and lead them.

Pray that they would choose to help others in need, instead of ignoring or being a part of the problem. Ask God to expose bullies and release deep healing and a desire to build up each other instead of tearing down.

Pray that they would walk in truth and love. That they would learn to speak the truth at all times, but with love.

Pray that they would stand up for what they believe in even when others won’t. That they would be strong and courageous, instead of fearful and timid.

Pray that they would ask for help when they are feeling pressured. That they would seek to please God and not their friends.

Pray that they would know that they are beautiful children of God and that they were created with a purpose. Ask God to grant them a sense of identity of who they really are.

Pray for Dove Creek as it is a new elementary school in Oconee county. It is opening this month (August). There are lots of great vibes around it.

Pray for peace and adjustment in the midst of lots of changes in the Oconee county school district. There is a lot of shuffling in Oconee county with teachers and students this school year (in light of the new school opening). The existing elementary schools will be smaller in enrollment which will be good though there is a lot of change.

Malcom Bridge Elementary has a new principal —Ms Haygood.. She was the VP. Pray that God would grant her grace and courage as she steps up and that she would be a great principal!

Ten prayers for children in public schools
Please use these prayers to be a launch pad to pray deeper into these topics. From the NavPress prayer card, excerpted from Pray!, issue #20, © 2002 Ida Rose Heckard. https://www.navigators.org/ten-prayers-for-public-schools/

Love. “Father, may the students and staff of this school experience Your love through the Christians they know in profound and authentic ways” (John 13:35).

Truth. “Lord, release truth in this school. Help students to rightly discern truth and not believe false teachings” (Proverbs 23:23).

School board. “I pray blessings on each school board member (try to pray for them by name). Father, may your will be done at board meetings” (Romans 13:1).

Principal. “May (name of principal) recognize the God-given responsibility he/she has for the best interests of the children who attend the school. May (name of principal) walk in wisdom, integrity, grace, and truth” (Proverbs 2:1-11).

Failing students. “Lord, I ask you to encourage those children who are struggling with their studies. Strengthen their minds. Help their teachers and parents know how to help them learn. Protect them from feelings of worthlessness and shame” (1 Thessalonians 5:14).

Violence. “Lord, stay the hand of violence against the children and staff of this school. Dismantle any plan to bring harm to them. Expose any weapon brought into the school premises and render it harmless” (Psalm 34:7; 54:1).

Christian programs. “Father, I pray for abundant blessings on programs that bring Christ into this public school. Help the groups who sponsor such programs function according to your Word and in harmony with each other. Bless the leaders and bring forth new and growing believers” (1 Corinthians 12:12-13).

Christian students. “Grant the Christian students who attend this school wisdom and boldness in living out their faith. Help them share effectively the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ with their classmates” (1 Timothy 4:12).

A chosen generation. “Father, may your kingdom come. From the students at this school, raise up a generation of people who worship you in spirit and in truth” (John 4:23-24; 1 Peter 2:9).

An open door. “Lord, may there be an open door in this school for the gospel to be shared with students and staff. Allow full advantage to be taken of every opportunity to name the name of Jesus” (Matthew 7:7; 1 Corinthians 16:9).

II – Middle School and High School
Here are some areas that Middle School and High School students need prayer…

Pray that students would make wise selections of friends, that they would find Jesus in the busyness of life, that they would influence friends for Christ, and that a movement for Christ would start.

Pray that students would break through with other students, that students would choose to follow Jesus rather than the world, that God would be glorified and for the Spirit to move on each campus.

Pray for FCA and Young Life as they press into these campuses. Pray that God would give them favor with the students, and for a rich harvest of disciples being plugged into Athens churches.

Pray for the Clarke Central football team (the coaches and players), that something powerful could happen on that team soon. In fact, pray that for all the schools.

Pray for the students at North Oconee High School, where it is repeatedly said that students are apathetic and entitled there. Please pray for revival there and for the hearts of the faculty to be renewed for their students.

Recently, two young men who just graduated from NOHS died – one was in a tragic vehicle accident a few days ago and the other drowned last month. Also, just last week a female High School student was seriously injured at the lake. There is much grieving and confusion. Please pray that God would meet those students and faculty in very tangible ways, and that He would turn “what the enemy meant for evil into good!”

A prayer for your Middle School or High School student
Here is an amazing prayer you can pray for your child. This crafted by Mark & Jill Herringshaw – http://www.beliefnet.com/columnists/prayerplainandsimple/2015/08/a-prayer-for-my-high-school-student.html#mY0YHjgts2jil1x7.99

Gracious Heavenly Father,

As my child prepares for another year of (Middle or) High School, hear my cry!

First, I thank You for my child. What a gift you have given. Please grant me wisdom to raise this child aright.

Please remove all obstacles that stand in the way of my child’s rich understanding of your grace, forgiveness, and unfathomable love.

Strengthen my child in the faith! Make my child an influencer in school, not a follower of the status quo, not a peer-pleaser, but a God-pleaser, not a grumbler or complainer, but one with a grateful heart, not idle and lazy, but hardworking and happy, not entitled to anything but the promises You have written in Your Word, not prone to addiction except to be addicted to the joy only Your Holy Spirit can give. Grant friends whose hearts align with Yours. Send your protective angels to prevent injuries. Give creativity and ingenuity. Grant a generous helping of a hunger to learn, never satisfied, never abated, always seeking for Truth, and never stopping short of discovering the order and beauty You have created in the universe.

May Your great Kingdom values be alive and well in my child – righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit, with the hallmark of love as value #1.

And ditto for this parent! May I model all the virtues I want so much to celebrate in the life of my child. May I model You, dear Lord.

All this is about You. All this is for You. For the King and for His Kingdom!

Amen.

III – College
Here are some areas that college students need prayer…

Pray that every school (including the various ones at UGA, would have a bold, spirit filled witness among the students and faculty members who would stand with them.

Pray that students would get plugged in quickly into a campus ministry and a local church and not be lured into the world; and that Christian students would be bold to reach out to the lost students around them in their classes.

Pray for smart choices by our students. Pray that they wouldn’t come to college with preconceived notions about the party life and automatically fall into that lifestyle, but that God would lead them into paths of righteousness and relationship with Him and His followers.

Pray for the 5000+ incoming freshmen to get involved in ministries and local churches quickly. Pray that this freshmen class would include men and women whom the Lord will raise up to be strong leaders on campus and collegiate ministries, and maybe even leaders of church youth ministries/groups.

Pray for the many transfer students. They are essentially an unreached demographic on our campus. Many come to college as older students and live off campus. By that time, most friend groups are already cemented, so these students have a hard time finding relationships or a place to belong. Pray that God would connect them to believers, a campus ministry and a local church.

Pray for the international students. Though we don’t have a huge international student population, we have a large first-generation immigrant population. Many student’s come to UGA whose parents immigrated. Many grew up in an environment with limited exposure to a clear presentation of the Gospel. Pray for divine connections with these students that lead to relationships centered around Christ. Pray also for those students who will be returning to their home nations – that the fire of God would be within them as they go with more than just an education! Pray for the ministries that specifically focus on international students.

Pray that the Lord will bring revival across the UGA campus, the Athens and Oconee schools, and Athens as a whole AND that we’d see more people come to Christ this year than we ever have before!

Pray that the Lord would provide necessary funding and other resources for ministries to be able to minister and carry out the call the Lord has given them (some ministries are currently experiencing funding-related hardships).

Pray that the Lord would fill the hearts of all believers in Athens, on all of the campuses, etc. with a burning desire to reach the lost and help disciple growing Christians. That all believers would yearn to be laborers for Jesus!

Pray for peace, order and heavenly wisdom within the administration of UGA. Pray for the President of UGA, Dr. Morehead, and the Deans. They are consistently bombarded with issues that plague our campus. Many of these have spiritual implications and affect the Gospel witness on our campus. Ask God to bring wise counsel to them and silence the counsel that would block or hinder the kingdom from advancing on campus. Ask God to give them boldness to do what is right and moral, not just what seems right to man!

Pray for all the campus ministries, including the various works being done in the Greek houses. These campus ministries include but are not limited to… Wesley, CRU, Team United, InterVarsity, Navigators, RUF, BCM,… Pray for the various chaplains who work with the athletic teams.

Pray for the local churches in Athens that have a college ministry. For wisdom, favor, boldness, focus, and fruitfulness.

Pray for greater unity on campus, specifically with campus ministries and local churches. Pray for outreach ministries such as The Great Exchange, that God would give them favor as they witness to students!

A prayer for your college student
Here is an amazing prayer you can use to pray for your college son or daughter. This crafted by Kristi Woods – https://www.ibelieve.com/faith/pray-these-3-bold-prayers-to-help-protect-your-college-student.html

Father, thank you for my student. This life you’ve woven in them is wonderful. During this school year, whether it’s in the dorm adjusting to their roommates, standing on the marching band or athletic field, sitting in a classroom, or staring at their homework, may my student park their thoughts on you. Protect my child against self-harm, failure, depression, and laziness. Surround them with your truth concerning drugs, alcohol, sex, and faith. Close the door on blame, bad-mouthing, judgment, and condemnation. May they consider and cherish, instead, what is true, allowing your perfect love to cast out all fear. May they dwell on all that’s honorable, just, pure, and lovely. May he/she toss aside the bad, clinging to the good – especially when it comes to relationships and their future with you. May virtue and praise echo in their mind and be reflected in their words and actions (Philippians 4:8).

Lord, you’ve given my student the ability to communicate, and it is good. May their words be acceptable in your sight. When they attempt to muffle or stuff words out of fear or uncertainty, may they be brave and allow godly communication its opportunity. When they face a tough conversation, I pray they persevere, continuing to trust you. Most importantly, Lord, may my young woman/man communicate with you on a regular basis. I pray they seek you and nourish a desire to hear your voice daily (Psalm 19:14).

Lord, you have made the eye for your purposes. With wisdom you beautifully knit each one.  May my child guard their eyes well. I pray they’ll grab wisdom, allowing it to filter what they choose to see and not see. May understanding lead their focus, causing them to turn from situations formatted by darkness. May they, instead, allow the light of your Word to filter their sight concerning friends, dates, movies, educational content, and any situation in which their eyes are involved (Proverbs 17:24).

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Galatians 5:19-23 (NLT)

Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Ephesians 1:16-18 (NLT)
I have not stopped thanking God for you. I pray for you constantly, 17 asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. 18 I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.

End of Summer Prayer Vigil

Friday, August 3 / 8pm to 8pm
Wesley Prayer Chapel  1196 South Lumpkin, Athens 30605

With a month still before us, all the slots are filled for this strategic and important prayer vigil. This is not normal. Usually we are scrambling up to the last minute to fill slots. But this time there are even groups still wanting to participate! We will be praying for all the students going back to school (from elementary through college). Teams from churches and ministries have signed up for ONE HOUR slots and will come facilitate their hour. Even if your church/ministry isn’t leading a specific slot, you are welcome to come pray for your kids at any time during the 24 hours! Please don’t miss this important opportunity to pray for your kids and the kids from your church as they re-enter their schools. This is going to be awesome and have a huge impact on our city!

The Mix 18 Prayer Watch Guide

Friday, February 23 (noon) to Saturday, February 24 (midnight), 2018
Athens Church

Thank you so much for being a part of The Mix Prayer Watch. Your prayer is part of a huge thing God is doing in our city. It’s God’s desire to move powerfully in Athens, and this student gathering is both catalytic and important. The prayers you pray matters. I believe God is going to do mighty awesome things because of our united fervent, focused prayer. As you pray, please pray big audacious prayers of faith for God to do what only He can do!!!

“You faithfully answer our prayers with awesome deeds, O God our Savior!”
Psalm 65:5a NLT

Prayer Topics

Students
Pray by name for the students that came from your church that they would have a fresh encounter with God. The names of all the student at The Mix, by churches, have been handwritten on poster boards and plastered on the walls in the prayer room, as well as at the end of this prayer guide. As each student gets prayed for, a line will be drawn through their name with a highlighter pen.

Speaker
Pray for Dan Lian. Ask God to anoint his speaking and breathe over every word that comes out of his mouth. Pray that the students would listen intently, eagerly and be willing to receive and respond as the Lord leads. Pray that God’s Word would not return void (Isaiah 55:10-11).

Here are the topics Dan will be speaking on, as well as the key verses and small group discussion questions for each session…

Misunderstanding:  Luke 15:1-7

  • What are some things that you’ve misunderstood about God?
  • What things did Dan’s message help you to see more clearly?
  • How will a clearer view of God change the way you follow him?

Creating Spaces: Mark 4:3-9

  • What things are currently filling space in your life?
  • Do you think you’ve given God enough space to create in your life?
  • Where could you make space in your heart/life for God to show you more of himself?

Pick up your cross: Mark 8:34-35

  • What does carrying your cross mean to you?
  • Are you truly willing to follow Jesus, even though it’s not going to be easy? Why?
  • Who do you have in your life to keep you accountable on your journey?

The Mix is not an event, it is an expression of the unity that God is establishing in His churches in Athens. Pray that The Mix would be catalytic and change the spiritual atmosphere in our city!!!

Here’s the churches and ministries involved in The Mix 2018… Alps Road Presbyterian Church, Antioch Christian Church, Ashford Church, Athens Church, Beech Haven Baptist Church, Briarwood Baptist Church, Chestnut Grove Baptist, Classic City Community Church, Comer Baptist Church, Corinth Church, Cornerstone, East Athens Baptist Church, Faith Presbyterian Church, Grace Athens~, Grace Fellowship, Green Acres Baptist Church, Grove Chapel, Hebron Christian Church, Lexington Baptist, Life Church, Living Hope, Lord of Glory Fellowship~, Mars Hill Baptist Church, New Covenant Worship Center, Prince Avenue Baptist Church, Relentless Grace~, River Rock, River Hills Church, Salem Baptist Church, Sonlight Baptist Church, Sparrow’s Nest, St James UMC, Statham Community Church, Timothy Baptist Church~, Tuckston UMC, Vesta Baptist Church, Watkinsville First Baptist Church, Watkinsville First UMC, Campus Prayer~, Lampstand Ministries~, Wesley Foundation~

Please pray for each of these schools by name…

Athens Academy, Athens Christian School, Athens High and Industrial School, Athens Montessori School, Burney-Harris-Lyons Middle School, The Career Academy, Cedar Shoals High School, Clarke Middle, Clarke Central High School, Classic City High School, Coile Middle School, Hilsman Middle School, Lyons Middle School, Malcolm Bridge, Master’s Academy, Monsignor Donovan Catholic High School, Oconee County Middle School, Westminster, and a bunch of home schools!

Prayer Watch – Summer 2017

PRAYER GUIDE
July 3 – September 1, 2017

“Fight the good fight of faith.” 1 Timothy 6:12a (NIV)

This summer we are having a prayer watch, and its focus is MEN! We’re praying that men would rise up across our city and fight for their families and marriages, to fight for their churches and for our city, AND to fight for their own personal courageous walk with Jesus Christ (against substance addictions, pornography, lust, fear, shame, selfishness, pride, etc.). Thanks for joining us! Thanks for being willing to pray for the men in your life! Thanks for praying for the men in our city!

Why prayer for men?

Obviously, women and children need prayer as well. And though we are focusing our prayer on men, we do so because when God gets a hold of a man’s heart, the impact ripples through everything they do, from their marriage to their family, their job, and their purpose and passion in life.

So here are some ways you can be praying these next eight weeks!

Pray for…

Men in your life (and if you’re a man, that includes you!)

  • Pray for those men you know who need a miracle! Whether it is for their healing, for their salvation, for their marriage, family, or broken relationship with their kids, siblings or parents. Ask audaciously for God to do what man can’t do! (Habakkuk 3:2)
  • Pray that their cold (or lukewarm) hearts would to be ignited with a passion for Jesus and come back to their first love (Revelation 2:4, 3:15-16).
  • Pray for purity of thought and deeds (Matthew 5:8, Hebrews 12:2, 2 Corinthians 10:5).
  • Pray that God would fan into flame the gifts that He has placed in their life (2 Timothy 1:6).
  • Pray that God would break the strongholds of money over their lives (1 Timothy 6:9-10).
  • Pray that these men would draw near to God as uninhibited, unashamed, warriors of prayer and worship (1 Timothy 2:8).
  • Pray that God would increase the faith in men to seek Him wholeheartedly and to please Him (Hebrews 11:6)

Men in Athens (and your city if you live elsewhere)

Many men need jobs. This affects their self-worth, and everyone around them. Jobs would help alleviate the high incidence of black men being arrested in Athens, as most of those being incarcerated are unemployed. Pray that God would release wisdom in our city that will increase jobs and place men in the right ones!

  • There are many men who have walked out on their marriages and families. Pray that God would draw them home to their wives & families.
  • Pray for the men who are in jail, homeless or on the run.
  • Pray for the men who are addicted to substances, gambling or pornography, sports, entertainment, etc.
  • Pray that God would pour out grace on those who are strong in the faith to invest in other men (2 Timothy 2:2).
  • Pray that men would commit themselves to the Lord, to their marriages & families, to their church and to those around them.
  • Pray that there would be a revival/awakening of men giving themselves 100% to the Lord, and to rise up as warriors for their marriages, families, jobs, church and our city!
  • Pray for pastors, especially as they work with and equip men to be warriors.

Fresh Wind Recovery Ministry

This is an eight-week 24/7 course for men who are recovering from various substance addictions. It starts on July 3 and is being held at Living Hope during the day. During off hours, the men will be housed (and supervised) together in a local venue. Staff members and prayer teams will pray with and for addicts every day. Addicts will worship and engage in several hours of Bible study each day. Addicts will learn about and give time each day serving others. For more information check out freshwindrecovery.org.

  • Pray for the men who are a part of it. Pray that God would meet them right where they are, and set them free. Pray that the chains of addiction would fall off of each addict.
  • Pray for those who will be leading it (Jerry Kizer and his team). There will be quite a few folks helping out, from Bible study teachers, to worship leaders, to prayer team members, to counselors, and others.
  • Pray that God would breathe on this ministry and allow it to be fruitful and ultimately impact (transform) multitudes of men across our city.
  • Pray for protection over each addict and leader, as well as over both the daytime and nighttime facilities.

The Heart of a Man

On Tuesday, July 25 at 7pm, Living Hope will be showing the soon to be released movie (in theaters this September), The Heart of a Man, which will be addressing specific issues men struggle with. Pastors, their spouses and key leaders are invited to this special showing. Justin Torrence, one of the actors in it, will be present to discuss how to use the movie to open up ministry opportunities. Please be praying that God would use this movie in our city to set men free from lust, shame, pornography, etc. To catch the preview trailer check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYDvRgj35OM

If you haven’t already done so, and would like to officially participate in the summer watch, please go to www.slottr.com/sheets/6659079.

If you need to be reminded of what time you signed up for (the slottr sign-up sheet is not allowing folks to see who has signed up), just let me know and I’ll check it for you.

Thank you for praying for men this summer. Your prayers matter to those men around you, as well as ones you may not meet this side of eternity! May the Lord meet you in tangible ways as you focus your prayers this summer! Please keep up on Facebook at www.facebook.com/groups/1423907481169281/

Bless you heaps!

The Athens Watch – Prayer Guide

November 1, 2015 – February 1, 2016

Jesus invited His disciples to watch and pray with Him. He is doing the same thing with us today. He is calling His church to wake up and pray, like never before. He is asking you, “will you keep watch with Me?” To watch means “to be vigilant, to be alert, to be watchful.” To watch for thirty minutes is more than just telling God all the things that you are thinking about or is concerning to you. What happens when you watch and pray is you look to see what God wants to show you, you listen to what He desires to say and you respond however He leads you. Don’t be in a rush to get through the list. But do expect Him to watch with you! Also understand that you are diving into an ongoing conversation, so listen before you speak.

This is a prayer guide to help you do just that over these three month of continuous prayer. Please use this as a guide, not as a legal document that must be walked through step by step. Ultimately, it is our desire that you feel great joy and freedom in watching with Jesus.

Worship

Begin your time with some praise. This is how we climb up the wall to take our place. Psalm 100:4 says to “Enter His gates with thanksgiving, go into His courts with praise” (Psalm 100:4). Dedicate this prayer slot to Him and to whatever He wants you to focus on.

Lay down your personal prayer burdens

Take a few minutes to unload the things you normally pray about or carry or things that are occupying your thoughts (check out 1 Peter 5:7 and Philippians 4:6-7).

Listen

Take a several moments to be still before the Lord. Ask Him to lead you through this prayer time. Romans 8:26-27 makes it clear that we do not know how to pray what is on the Father’s heart. But the Spirit does, and He will help us if we ask Him to.

Confess your sin

Confession is a powerful weapon. Start with asking God to forgive you of all known and hidden sin. Then move out to that of the church and this city (check out Daniel 9:4 and 1 John 1:9). We can’t intercede effectively for things that we haven’t surrendered in our own life.

Your church and pastors

Take some time to pray that God would fill the church that you belong to. Pray specifically for the pastor. Ask God to release favor, wisdom, courage and stamina. Ask God to refresh his soul. Ask God to bless and protect his marriage. Pray for all the pastors on staff at your church.

Other churches in Athens

Take some time to pray for other churches and pastors that you know here in Athens. Ask God to richly bless them with life, power, protection, passion and more of Him.

Other ministries in Athens

Pray for the other ministries in Athens such as Sparrows Nest, the Launch Group, International Student ministries, Athens School of Ministry & Worship Arts, etc.

The lost

Pray for the salvation of everyone that you know – friends, family, neighbors, classmates, dorm mates, co-workers – who don’t know Christ… Pray the veil that the enemy has used to keep people blinded to the gospel in our city would be worn thin, torn and removed (2 Corinthians 4:3-4). Pray for the gospel to reach open ears and responsive hearts in Athens. It’s God’s desire that all be saved and prayer is linked to that (1 Timothy 2:1-3).

Families

Pray for father’s to come home, for marriages to be restored, for families to be reconciled in Athens. Ask God to provide jobs for those who are out of work, and to expose hidden sins (i.e. pornography) to set the captives free. Pray that fathers’ hearts would be turned toward their children and children’s hearts back to their parents (Malachi 4:5-6). Pray for reconciliation within marriages.

Children and youth

Pray that God would pour out His Spirit on the schools in this city. Pray that classrooms would become incubators of faith instead of being toxic, that teachers would be free to live and share their faith. Pray for the schools that you know of, asking God to do what He needs to do to release revival there. Bless the administrators, faculty and teachers. Pray for the children’s and student ministries in churches in Athens, that God would raise up creative, faithful, lovers of Jesus to volunteer.

Colleges

Historically colleges are conduits for moves of God (and negative things as well). Pray specifically for Athens Tech, Piedmont, UGA, and UNG, that God would prepare the way for a powerful movement that will sweep through these places, through Athens and then beyond.

Freshmen class

Over 5,000 freshmen started classes this Fall. Many are feeling displaced, perhaps lonely and overwhelmed. They are in need of Christian friends, and places to connect. Pray that followers of Christ will continue to connect with them and invite them to local churches and to campus ministries. Pray that there would be a dynamic move of God in this freshmen class.

Campus ministries

Thank God for each of these (and others you know about). Pray for them as well as their directors and staff – Athletes in Action, Campus Crusade for Christ (CRU), Connection Café (Prince Avenue Baptist), InterVarsity, Navigators, Reformed University Fellowship (RUF), Wesley Foundation, Worldwide Discipleship. Also pray for the churches that have a strong focus on college students – Athens Church (The Warehouse), Grace Athens, Watkinsville First Baptist Church (WFBC), etc.

City Government

Pray for the mayor, and all those who govern our city. Pray for the police, fire departments and all who serve us. Pray for the hospital, asking that in all these places, from city hall to the community hall, that God would move in power, drawing all people to Him.

Revival

Bottom line, we’re asking God to come take His place in our city. See 2 Chronicles 7:14 for requirements.

Praise

Finish your time with a few moments of praise, thanking Him for helping you pray, for hearing your prayers, and for the answers that are coming!

Lastly

Bless the person who will be engaging in the next prayer slot. Check the Athens Prayer Network Facebook group to keep track of what others are hearing and praying through. Be sure to add your thoughts, words and prayer focuses that you got during your watch. By doing this everyone keeps in step! Thanks!!!

May God sustain you and bless you tremendously for taking part in this Prayer Watch over Athens!

Watch Sign Ups Begin

It’s time to get your slot for The Athens Prayer Watch. Remember you will be praying in that same slot over the next three months starting the week of November 1. You can pray by yourself, with a friend or even as a group, from wherever you are at.

To sign up go to www.slottr.com/sheets/411933

We will be putting together a reserve team of those who want to step in when others are unable to do their slot (i.e. sick, heading out of town, getting married…). They will be our on-call team. Sign ups will start for that once we get a little momentum for the Watch itself.

Huge blessings to you as you take your place on the wall in Athens!!!
