“Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts.” Ephesians 5:18-19 (NLT)

Ok, let me preface to say, drunkenness from the Holy Spirit is not forbidden, it is even encouraged. But being intoxicated with alcohol, drugs or any substance is not something Spirit filled lovers of Jesus do, because it ruins lives! Understand this, we are not to be drunk from the wine of this world but the wine of the Holy Spirit, the wine from heaven! Paul compares being filled with the Holy Spirit with being under the influence of alcohol. One is good, the other is not! And sometimes the wine of the Holy Spirit is intoxicating! I have witnessed believers being filled with the Holy Spirit and exhibiting what appeared to be drunkenness! They couldn’t drive. They couldn’t walk straight and they slurred their words! And there was no hangover!!! This was not by the wine of this world but of the Spirit of God. So how do we go about getting more of this heavenly wine? We are told, that is commanded, to be filled with the Holy Spirit. And one way Paul describes going about getting filled is by singing to one another psalms, hymns and spiritual songs!

And did you know that God literally sings with and over you (Zephaniah 3:17)? And when you enter these songs you actually join Him. A spiritual song is a God breathed song of spontaneity. Elsewhere it is called “tᵊhillâ praise” (Psalm 22:3) which is the kind of song that God inhabits. It is the new song that releases the now song. The Lord rejoices over us with singing. Spiritual songs are releasing what God is singing in heaven on earth. Some theologians say God sang the earth into being! Another way to say it is, our singing heavens songs releases heaven on earth. God is looking for an amen to His yes! So be it on earth! The Lord is looking for those who will dance with Him, who will flow with Him, who will sing His heavenly songs. Who will partner with Him in the spontaneous songs? Will you? Btw, one good place you can do this is at AHOP!

Ask the Lord to teach you and take you deeper in praise and worship this year. Invite Him to teach you how to dance with Him, and to sing spontaneously with Him. Invite Him to fill you with the Holy Spirit in ways you have never experienced before. Tell Him you want your cup overflowing with His presence, and would love to drink of His heavenly wine! Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not an option, but a command. Ask Him for the grace to be filled and filled and filled!!!
