“Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying.” Acts 2:2 (HCSB)
Tomorrow is Pentecost Sunday, and so little is being said about it. Though the Holy Spirit and a host of fiery angels would like to fall once again on the Body of Christ who are waiting expectantly, so many are focusing on other things, like Memorial Day. Sadly, some churches won’t even mention that it is Pentecost Sunday.
Pentecost comes fifty days after Passover. Though it had Old Testament, old covenant significance, for us it represents the birth of Christ’s Church and the release of the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would come (John 16:7, Acts 1:8)! We are no longer required to offer animal sacrifices year after year. Jesus is the final sacrifice. In AD 70 the Romans destroyed Jerusalem and literally leveled the Temple, removing every stone just as Jesus prophesied (Matthew 24:2). Ever since then the old way has ceased!
We are in a new covenant, old things have passed away and behold new things have come (Isaiah 42:9). The Kingdom of God is here and is increasing. God’s Kingdom and rule will continue to increase, to grow, to expand (Isaiah 9:6-7). What happened in that Pentecost two millennium ago, as the Holy Spirit and a fiery army of angels fell upon the 120 waiting remnant (btw, where was the other 380?), was just the beginning. Joel’s prophecy wasn’t completely fulfilled, it was the beginning, a shadow of what is coming. Now 2000 years after the upper room outpouring, the stage is set for more. Joel prophesied that, “And afterward I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughter will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on My servants, both men and women, I will pour out My Spirit in those days” (Joel 2:28-29 – NIV).
Join me in praying and declaring that the Church in Athens welcomes the Holy Spirit and the host of fiery angels to fall upon us, upon every man, women and child, upon every service, upon every home, upon everyone, even those who don’t know Christ yet! Personally, invite Him to fall upon your in fresh, empowering ways, with new levels of revelation, dreams and visions. Pray it for your children. Pray for your pastor to embrace the Holy Spirit with all His heart and make whatever room is necessary at your church for the Holy Spirit to fall. Ask God for an increase in angelic activity in your life, in your church and across our city. Declare that the Kingdom of God is here!
