“After this I will pour out My Spirit on all humanity; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your old men will have dreams, and your young men will see visions.” Joel 2:28 (HCSB)

God has always spoken to His children. Even after the Fall, He looked for ways to communicate and connect with those who sought Him. Though He uses many methods, one is through dreams, visions and angelic visitations! In our scientific world, these may seem weak, and even foolish, but isn’t that how God chooses to confound the wise and educated (1 Corinthians 1:27). Btw, we live in the “after this” time of history that Joel was talking about! On the Day of Pentecost, we got a sampler of what’s coming. What was localized at the birthing of the church has now become global! It is growing, and intensifying! So, my point here is, dreams and visions are not anything new!

For example, Mary unintentionally met with an angel to get her assignment regarding the birth of the Savior of the world (Luke 1:26-38)! This encounter and her obedient response cost her everything! Joseph had a dream with an angel saying “take Mary to be your wife because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit” (Matthew1:20). Can you imagine the weight that he put on this dream?! And he obeyed it immediately! His obedience was costly! Then a few months later, after Jesus was born, Joseph had another dream about getting up immediately and fleeing to Egypt because Herod was searching to kill his new born son (Matthew 2:13). And again, without hesitation Joseph obeyed! Then later on while they were in Egypt, Joseph had another dream saying Herod is dead so it’s time to head back to Israel (Matthew 2:19), and yet still in another dream, Joseph was told not to go to Judea, so instead he took his family to Nazareth in Galilee (Matthew 2:22). Dreams had a huge part in the birth and early days of Jesus! But it wasn’t just that Mary and Joseph had dreams, it was that they believed them and obeyed them immediately.

And of course, in the Old Testament we see another Joseph having dreams that got him trouble with his brothers, and ultimately sold into slavery (Genesis 37). But what they meant for evil God used for good (Genesis 50:20). This dreamer became instrumental in saving Egypt and the peoples around it, including his own family.

We have other dreamers, such as Pharaoh, his baker and cupbearer, and Nebuchadnezzar. All these guys took their dreams seriously! Solomon had at least two dreams or night visions that radically impacted him and the throne he sat on (2 Chronicles 1:7, 7:12). And of course, there were many others! And likewise, many people are dreaming in this hour! In fact, it is increasing. Joel prophesied about this time!

Just one of our stories… Shellie & I get a lot of significant dreams. One time while we were praying about purchasing a house in Australia, Shellie dreamt of a Cape Cod home. It was very American looking! Shellie saw the number 5 on the box, a handful of doves on the roof and a gentle rain shower. With great clarity she saw the layout of the inside of the house, even the colors of the carpets and walls. Since we had no money and our monthly support was really low at that time, we simply figured it was symbolic of the house of prayer that God was calling us to build. Then we actually found the literal house, for sale! Yes, strange as it was, the Lord led us to a very American style Cape Cod house in Australia! The Lord ended up leading us to a bank that would actually finance us, remember no money and only minimal monthly funds. Then the Lord gave us this house, way below market value. When we were inside signing the papers, we pondered, if they only knew we had no money for the down payment would they be signing this contract with us. But to us we had nothing to lose. We even had the potential of being kicked out of the nation because our visas had expired and we were waiting to see if we’d be granted permanent residency. But that whole process was hung up somewhere. All that to say, a month later when the down payment was due, God had poured out more than enough! When we arrived at the house to pay the down payment there were doves on the roof and a light rain shower glistened upon the house. Btw, the colors of the walls and the carpet were as the dream depicted, except reversed. Go figure! God leads through dreams. Jesus said “My sheep hear My voice… and follow Me” (John 10:27). This is one of MANY dreams God has given Shellie & I over the years, and it really seems to be increasing. Sometimes they are symbolic, sometimes they are quite literal. Most times they require faith to walk it out. A lot of times they become corporate prayer themes in our gatherings.

One last thing, we have found that as we steward the revelation that He gives us through writing it out in our journals and praying into it, He is giving us more!

Thank the Lord that He is speaking today. Tell Him you want to hear Him. Repent if you have simply ignored the dreams He was given you. Ask Him once again to release dream, visions and even angelic encounters. Tell Him that you will be faithful to steward the revelation that He shares with you. As you go to bed tonight, ask Him to speak to you however He wants, and that you are listening!
