“Now the sons of Eli were scoundrels who had no respect for the Lord…” 1 Samuel 2:12 (NLT)
Eli, who was a priest in the Tent of Meeting, had two sons, Hophni and Phinehas. And like their father were priests. But they had wandered from the LORD! These sons of Eli were wicked and would steal the best meat that was offered to the LORD. They would have sex with “the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting” (v22). In other words, these two sons of Eli perverted the holy, stole from what was God’s and slept with the volunteers. Eli, should have done something about it but he ignored, tolerated, even permitted their actions. In other words, he affirmed them! By his actions he was just as guilty as them! God gave them a time to repent, but they did not! And God judged them quickly!
Sadly, this Old Testament story has been repeated throughout history, and likewise, it has been happening even today! Perversion permeates throughout our culture and the church has not escaped its slithering influence. Nevertheless, there is a shaking happening, and what can be shook will be (Hebrews 12:27). There is an exposure happening, and what is hidden is being revealed (Ephesians 5:11-14, Matthew 10:26). God is giving His people an opportunity to come out into the light, repent and turn back to Him with our whole hearts. He is calling us to come out of Babylon (Revelation 18:4-8) and not suffer from her sins!
Please pray that God’s House, His Church, His people, would come out from her sin, from her hidden perversions, and every foul stench of this world system that God refers to as Babylon! Pray for a fear of God to once again fall on His people. Pray for pastors, starting with your own, to no longer tolerate or affirm any level of sin! Pray for conviction and a longing to be pure and holy as His people, to fall on your church and the churches across our city. Pray for those who are pursuing holiness and doing all they can to leave Babylon. Ask God to grant them a grace, courage and wisdom to navigate these turbulent waters and to completely cut all that needs to be cut away from Babylon! Ask the Lord to show you any place where you have or are affirming sin in any way!
