I have asked one thing from the LORD; it is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, gazing on the beauty of the LORD and seeking Him in His temple.” Psalm 27:4 (HCSB)

The funny thing is, there are many ONE THINGS! Well, maybe just different ways of saying the same thing… King David told us the one thing is seeking God’s presence (Psalm 27:4). Moses talked about the ONE THING, of being hidden in God’s presence, His shelter and His shadow (Psalm 91). Jesus told Martha that Mary chose the ONE THING, the best thing (Luke 10:42). A New Testament writer said that the ONE THING is, in faith seeking Him diligently (Hebrews 11:6). Jesus also said that we are to seek ONE THING above all other things, and that is the Kingdom and the King (Matthew 6:33). Jesus said that the ONE THING His Church will be recognized as is a HOUSE OF PRAYER (Luke 19:46). Jesus also instructed us that the ONE THING is to love God with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength (Matthew 22:37-38)!

But let me ask, are these one things our priorities, your priorities? Do you see these as the top things at your church? Are they the first and foremost things in your life? Does your church’s prayer ministry have priority over everything else? Is your pastor a man of prayer? Are you a person that puts seeking God first, loving Him with your whole heart and being a person of prayer at the top of your list? Would people consider that of you? Does your love for God rise above all other loves?

I realize these are penetrating questions, but this is what the word says! This is not my idea, but God’s!!! We have somehow accepted a lessor ONE THING! Somehow the enemy has got us busy doing many good things but causing us to miss or greatly dilute the ONE THING! Jesus never said that His Church was to be recognized as a place of teaching, or of fellowship, or of social justice, or even of evangelism. Yes, those things are important, but they come in second place to prayer. No, He literally said that His house will be called a house of prayer. In other words, it is His desire that we make that our top priority, above every other good thing!

Btw, prayer is seeking His presence. It is intimacy with Him. It is seeking Him and His kingdom. It is coming into alignment with His way and will. And it is exercising our delegated governmental authority on this planet through declarations and obedience! It is trusting God with all the other things! The ONE THING is authentic, intimate, Spirit-led, listening, passionate, loving, PRAYER… There is actually only ONE THING! Jesus said that if you love Me, you will obey Me (John 14:23, 15:10). The ONE THING leads us to many other things that Jesus wants us to do! The ONE THING births His purposes through our lives! But without the ONE THING in place, we are missing the mark, by a long shot!!!

Ask God to make you into His house of prayer. Ask Him to stir your pastor, and draw your church into the ONE THING! Ask Him to expose all the things that have taken a higher priority than He desires, and to give you, your pastor and your church the grace to lay those things down for the ONE THING. Ask Him to stir your heart with a deeper, even burning passionate desire for His presence.
