You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.” Matthew 5:13 (ESV)

Most of us have seen bumper stickers with the slogan “SALT LIFE.” Boy does that preach! Jesus said we are to be the salt of the earth. We are called to live the salt life. Or as another logo I recently saw in North Carolina, “STAY SALTY!”

The primary role of salt is to enhance flavor and to preserve. Salt stings if put on a wound. Salt can be used to cleanse. The Church is meant to be the salt of the world, but too much of the church has lost its saltiness. Has your church become so much like the world that it no longer enhances lifestyles with hope, peace and joy or preserves the godly values of our culture. Jesus said everyone will be salted with fire (Mark 9:49). Is your church preaching that?

What are you doing to stay salty? Jesus said that if salt loses its saltiness it cannot be made salty again (Matthew 5:13). Unsalty salt is good for nothing not even being thrown out upon the dung heap. It is only good to be trampled on (Luke 14:34-35). Remember, those are Jesus’ own words! So, let me ask again, what are you doing to live the salt life so you can enhance other people’s lives and to preserve truth in a culture where up is down and right is wrong? So much of the church has lost its saltiness, please don’t let it happen to you!

Ask Him to show you any place where you are beginning to lose your saltiness. Ask Him to “re-salt” you so that your life would be salty to those around you once again. Ask Him to increase the saltiness of your pastor, your church leadership and across your entire congregation. If your church has lost its saltiness, repent and cry out to God for mercy and a “re-salting” with His presence before it is too late! May the saltiness of your church cause the community around you to become thirsty for the living water that only Jesus provides!
